Maketo gang nabbed, as Police intensifies fight against MaShurugwi



Police in Kwekwe have arrested 8 members of the notorious Maketo machete-wielding gang after found in possession of machetes, swords, bow and arrow and home made knives.

Following a tip off police arrested Albert Tembo (27), Michael Mutevedzi (18), Honest Sibanda (31), Jerald Chinondo (30), Petros Mabeka (33), Alexander Moyo (39), Japhet Tembo (21) & Chiko Mukucha (25).

Three of them were arrested while they were in their vehicle, a BMW registration number AET 4451 and police recovered several machetes.

They then led police to Mbizo high- density suburb where more suspects were arrested and were found with home-made knives and machetes.

Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified the fight against machete wielding gangs with more than a thousand people arrested in connection to different crimes.

In a statement released by the ZRP announced that over a thousand people had been arrested with a number of weapons used in the crimes recovered as well.

“The ongoing operation against illegal mining and machete wielding gangs has so far accounted for 1 536 accused people. The police has recovered several vehicles, fire arms, a toy gun, machetes, explosives, pepper sprays, ammunition, digital scale and associated mining implements,” it read.

The police also highlighted that they would be conducting searches in vehicles and also targeting those without registration plates as the robbers are using such to conduct criminal activities.

The statement also encouraged members of the public to cooperate wth the police whilst they conduct their work in pursuit of the criminals.
