The Gweru city council is up in arms with residents amid reports thathe local authority used $120 000 to purchase a brand new Toyota Prado for suspended Town Clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza.
The revelations come amid reports that a fleet of top-of-the-range vehicles which were unprocedurally procured by council management are on the way.
Using hashtags ‘restore pride’ and ‘service delivery’, the Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) raised the alarm on its Twitter handle, posting:
“Reliable sources have confirmed that @GweruC (Gweru City Council) have recently purchased a US$120.000 Toyota Prado for suspended TC Gwatipedza”.
Substantive chamber secretary, Vakayi Douglas Chikwekwe is acting in place of suspended town clerk, Gwatipedza. Recently, findings by the audit committee unearthed rampant excesses at the local authority including flouting of tender procedures by the perennially bungling council.
The local authority’s spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee was not picking up calls when midlandsnews contacted her for a comment.
