The court also said it decided to forfeit his cars as making him restitute ZIMRA $11 996 in duty would be tantamount to double punishment. It was the state’s case that Tapfuma was importing personal cars using the President’s name and evading paying import duty. He in the process imported 8 cars.

Then Tapfuma was director of residents at State House and ZanuPF Central Committee member Douglas Tapfuma. Tapfuma has been languishing in remand prison since last year. Tapfuma was convicted after a full trial by a Harare Magistrate Esthere Chivasa.

In her judgement magistrate Chivasa said that Tapfuma’s actions were purposeful and well-calculated knowing that no one would scrutinise his acts considering the office he was holding. She said Tapfuma’ s defence was riddled with irregularities which were irrelevant to the charges he was facing.

Tapfuma also told the court in his defence that he was following a policy which was already in existence, which allowed him to import cars, when he assumed the office.
