Kwekwe trio caught stealing ZESA transformers

Three men from Amaveni Kwekwe have been arrested for tempering with ZESA installations at Chaka Mine.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested Petros Dube, Tichaona Khumalo and Tanaka Sezani of Amaveni, Kwekwe.

They were arrested on 22 June 2020.

The trio was charged for interfering with ZESA installations.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police the trio was caught red handed stealing from a ZESA transformer at Chaka Mine.

ZRP also recovered a 2 metre armoured cable was at the scene.

The government of Zimbabwe is reportedly pushing for a mandatory 30-year jail sentence for people found guilty of vandalising electricity infrastructure to curb the vice.

Energy minister Fortune Chasi said this when he was officially opening the inaugural Renewable Conference and Expo in Victoria Falls sometime in March this.

Chasi said vandalism of Zesa infrastructure had gone out of hand.

He said damage of Zesa installations, especially transformers, bordered on sabotage reporting that close to 3 000 transformers had been vandalised countrywide.
