OWEN MATAVA in Mbizo, Kwekwe
The artisanal miners involved were illegally mining at an unregistered mining site located between Mbizo 8 and 15 in Kwekwe, midlands news can reveal.
Two illegal miners were found dead Tuesday morning with one reportedly injured following the collapse of a shaft at an undesignated mining location deep in the residential area of Mbizo.
While police could not immediately respond to questions, eyewitness and Mbizo 15 residents told midlands news that indeed three of the five illegal miners were trapped underground after the shaft they were working on collapsed around 3am today (Tuesday).
It is believed that a group of five illegal miners were digging for gold without following recommended mine safety precautions. Witnesses added that this could have led to the collapse of the shaft.
One of the illegal artisanal miners at the scene also confirmed the incident.
“We managed to retrieve two of our colleagues, one was badly injured and was rushed to hospital”, said the illegal miner who spoke on condition of not being named.
Meanwhile police arrived at scene of the incident after residents had already retrieved the bodies of the two illegal miners.
