OWEN MATAVA in Gweru
Former Midlands Minister of Provincial Affairs, Jason Machaya, who was facing charges of abuse of office, was sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted for criminal abuse of office, midlands news can reveal.
Machaya and co-accused Chaisanyerwa Chibururu will however, serve an effective 2 and half years in jail each after 18 months were conditionally suspended.
Gweru Provincial Magistrate Charity Maphosa delivered the judgement on Tuesday while Garudzo Ziyaduma appeared for the state.
Machaya and Chibururu were dressed in khaki prison garb and were in leg irons after spending the night at Whawha Medium Prison.
Machaya was facing allegations of unlawfully allocating and disposing of State land.
The former Gokwe Senator was arrested on January 3, 2018 and was out on ZWL1000 bail.
Tuesday’s judgment comes after the former Zanu-PF Midlands Provincial chairman, was on August 17, issued with a warrant of arrest after he absconded court citing poor health conditions.
Provincial Magistrate, Charity Maphosa was expected to deliver the final judgement on August 17 on a court case that has been pending for the past two.
However, Machaya’ legal representative, Aleck Muchadehama, described the August 17 warrant as administrative as he indicated that the court had been advised of Machaya’ poor health condition which could not allow him to stand before the court then.
“The warrant you were talking about is merely administrative. We wrote to the court advising them that our client was unable to attend court due to a medical operation.
“The court is aware that Machaya received the operation on August 8, and he needs at least 14 days to recover according to the doctors, we look forward to appear before the same court on September 22”, Muchadehama was quoted as having said.
