GWERU- The Midlands province has now kick-started preparations to host this year’s edition of the National Youth and Paralympic Games to be held here in July this year, Provincial Affairs Minister, Senator Larry Mavhima has confirmed.

According to Senator Mavhima, the province has already assembled ‘the best local organizing team’ that is prepared to make sure that the annual sporting extravaganza is a success. Senator Mavhima said the province will also deliver ‘the best and memorable’ youth and paralympic games.

“Midlands Province will be hosting the Zimbabwe National Youth and Paralympic Games this year from July to August. As the host province’s patron, I want you to know the best local organizing team has been assembled to make the games a success. Let us support them”, Senator Mavhima revealed on Twitter.

The province has already held a preparatory meeting at Mkoba Teachers’ College which was attended by members from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and various sporting associations from the province.

The National Youth Games were incepted in 2003 with the pursuit of creating greater access to sport for the youths below the age of 20 years. On the other hand, the Paralympic games were introduced five years later, in 2008 with th primary objective of accomodating the physically challenged in sport.

As such, athletes like Vitalis Chikoko who is now playing professional Basketball in Italy and Ngoni Makisha who became the first Zimbabwean to win a bronze medal at the World Championships in South Korea 2011 are products of the revered local sporting jamborees.

The Youth and Paralympic games also provide an opportunity for scouts to identify talent from the grassroots and are widely revered as talent identification platforms.
