The Nelson Chamisa led MDC outfit, Midlands provincial youth Deputy Treasurer, Knowledge Makiwa age not given, is under prosecution for allegedly insulting President, Emmerson Mnangagwa and is expected back in court today, writes Owen Matava.
Makiwa who has already appeared at the Zvishavane Magistrate Court on more than three occasions over the same case, is being charged for undermining authority of or insulting President as defined in section 33 (2) (b) of he Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
Makiwa allegedly had an altercation with a state security agent on December 25, 2017 who is now accusing him of insulting state President, Mnangagwa. He is alleged to have said “Pfutseki nechi CIO chako. Pfutseki naPresident vako Mnangagwa. I am not like the man you beat”, translated to “to hell with your CIO, to hell with your President Mnangagwa.” this according to the court papers.
MDC Alliance Midlands Province said it is deeply concerned by the continued harassment and arrests of its provincial leaders and activists on flimsy charges.
“It is our hope that the courts would be impartial over an issue of altercation of two adults devoid of any insult to the President of the country.
“Makiwa has been traumatised by false accusations over too long a time and it seems to be a deliberate ploy to pre-y occupy MDC-A leaders and incapacitate them from doing their work in promoting the growth of MDCA alliance particularly in rural areas.
“We also appeal to all MDCA supporters in Mberengwa, Zvishavane and Gweru to inundate Zvishane courts in solidarity with Makiwa tomorrow (Wednesday) morning”, said provincial party spokesperson, Dr Takavafira Zhou
