Just In: Gokwe man steals vehicle at funeral

Gokwe police has arrested Tashinga Courage Mutengarenga (22) for stealing a motor vehicle at a funeral in Mapfungautsi suburbs in Gokwe, midlandsnews can report.

Midlands Province Police Spokesperson, Inspector, Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident and the arrest of the 22 year old man. He said the incident occurred on July 8 at about 1600 hours.

Circumstances are that Desire Pendekwa a man aged 33 years of Njelele, Gokwe went to Mapfungautsi suburbs to attend a funeral and parked his vehicle a Honda CRV outside the yard.

Upon parking, it is reported that Pendekwa removed the car keys from the ignition and left the doors of the vehicle unlocked. Police says he later returned where he parked his motor vehicle and could not locate it.

Mahoko says Pendekwa reported the matter to the Police who quickly attended the scene, picked information during inquiries and pursued the direction the motor vehicle had taken.

“The suspect Mutengarenga on realising that he was being pursued by the Police, failed to negotiate a curve and plunged into a culvert. He was subsequently arrested and the vehicle was recovered”, said Mahoko.

Police says upon interviewing the suspect, it was established that he was also attending the same funeral together with Pendekwa.

The value of the stolen vehicle is US$ 6000.

“We appeal that motorists must always lock their motor vehicles when leaving them parked. We applaud members of the public who assisted with information which led to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of a stolen vehicle”, added Mahoko.
